Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, California. DuVernay discovered her love for art from her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized to promote activism. Her mother was also a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to convey messages through the medium of art. Although DuVernay lived within Compton with her family she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college when she became attracted to the field of production for the broadcast media. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked examine the garbage inside the house of a member of jury. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the field of public relations.
